When using NVIDIA Broadcast as your camera source in CANVID, you may notice that your webcam feed appears squished. This happens due to a mismatch in resolution handling between CANVID and NVIDIA Broadcast.

What's Happening?

  1. CANVID Records at 640 x 480:
    • CANVID is designed to record webcams at a resolution of 640 x 480 (aspect ratio 4:3).
    • This resolution is ideal for the picture-in-picture format CANVID uses, ensuring efficient disk usage and faster performance for AI features.
  2. NVIDIA Broadcast Resolution Mismatch:
    • When you select NVIDIA Broadcast as your camera in CANVID, the app requests the 640x480 resolution.
    • NVIDIA Broadcast sends a feed at this resolution, but internally, it resizes the input from the user’s higher-resolution webcam (e.g., 720p or 1080p) down to 640x480. This resizing process may distort the image, making it look squished.

How to Solve the Issue

To resolve this, adjust the resolution in the NVIDIA Broadcast app:

  1. Open the NVIDIA Broadcast app.
  2. Locate the resolution dropdown menu.
  3. Select a resolution that matches the 4:3 aspect ratio, such as 640x480 (this is the perfect match for CANVID).
  4. Run CANVID and start recording using NVIDIA Broadcast as your camera again.

By selecting a compatible resolution, the feed will display correctly in CANVID without distortion the next time you record with the app.

NOTE: If 640x480 or other 4:3 resolutions are not listed, it indicates that the webcam may not support these formats.

Why Does Canvid Use 640x480?

Canvid records at this resolution for the following reasons:

  • Optimized Picture-in-Picture Display: The webcam feed occupies only a small portion of the screen, so higher resolutions would offer no visual benefit.
  • Efficient Disk Usage: Higher resolutions consume unnecessary disk space, which CANVID aims to minimize.
  • Improved AI Background Removal Performance: Lower resolutions allow CANVID's AI Background Removal feature to operate faster and more efficiently.

A BETTER Solution: Use Canvid's Built-In AI Background Removal

If your goal is to remove your camera background, you can bypass NVIDIA Broadcast entirely by using CANVID's built-in AI Background Removal feature. This option is optimized for performance and does not require a greenscreen to use.
